Is This Why We Almost Lost Theo?

This may be why Theo Epstein almost quit a couple of years ago. He was pushing the Red Sox to focus on developing their own talent through the farm system, rather than buying big players at mid-career. From the linked article, you can see why it not only makes good baseball sense (continuity, etc.), but also good economic sense (one in the same in many cases).

With Ellsbury, Pedroia and other home grown talent now leading the roster, I would say that Theo's "baseball genius" reputation is well deserved. Red Sox Nation dodged a bullet a couple of years ago when Epstien was almost driven from the club.
