US Economy in 2006

US GDP growth came in last year at 3.4%. That means that economy increased by almost a half a trillion dollars in one year. To put that in perspective, here's what that compares to:

  1. Greater than the total size of any nation's economy not in the top fifteen.
  2. About the size of the whole US economy when JFK was elected president.
  3. About the size of the Dutch economy, the fifth largest in Europe.
  4. A little less than half the size of the whole Canadian economy.
  5. About two and half times the new wealth creation in the Chinese economy in the same year.
  6. More than the whole Defense Department budget.
These are just back of the envelope calculations, but you get the point. People sometimes forget how much new wealth this economy generates year after year.
