The Central Question

This may drive the news in the upcoming week. If it doesn't, it will be a great travesty.

Finally, someone in the vaunted mainstream media asked the central question regarding the "surge". Not if 20,000 troops is exactly the right number. Not what impact it will have on Bush's presidency. And not whether the new strategy will help or hurt the Republicans, Democrats or whoever in the next election.

No, the central question is, what happens if it doesn't work?

As Ms. Hess says (and I paraphrase)... "Bush is going to be out of office in less than two years. The country needs to know where we will be then and what we are doing about it now."

It is time for politicians, journalists and citizens to get serious about this war and quit using it as a political prop.
