James Brown Popcorn

The man in his prime.

While living in London about ten years ago, I saw a very good BBC documentary on the history of soul music. According to people who put the show together, the fundamental sound that led from soul to the "Philadelphia Sound" to disco could all be traced back to James Brown.

Brown was a absolute perfectionist with his musicians, demanding total commitment and professionalism. Word was that he was tough on people who didn't measure up to his personal standards, but rewarded hard work. He was a consistent supporter of Republicans, as their focus on personal responsibility appealed to him. He of course had well publicized problems in his personal life. But at the end of the day, he should simply be remembered for his significant contribution to American music.
